Over the past week or so Jasper Room has begun to show an interest in their bodies. They have been asking things like “What are birthmarks?” and “Why do I have a belly button?” To help them understand their bodies a little more we have begun an exploration into the human body! When the children arrived Wednesday morning they discovered that the dramatic play area had been transformed into a hospital, complete with hospital equipment, xrays and hospital beds! The children have been very busy admitting patients, diagnosing problems and coming up with solutions to help fix each others ailments.
During morning meeting we had a discussion about our eyes. The children all looked into a mirror and told us something about their eyes! Some of us have brown, some green, some blue.. we’re all different! One child had eyes that were blue and brown so we learned a new word, heterochromia, which is the name for someone with two different colored eyes. As we talked about this phenomenon some of the children began to notice that they had different colors in their eyes as well. We discovered that each of us has a pupil and also learned that our pupils get bigger or smaller depending on the type of light we are in. Wanting to explore this more we took mirrors into the bathrooms and turned off all the lights for 2 minutes. When the lights came back on we were able to watch as our pupils went from very large to very small! Next week we will continue our exploration of eyes and then we will begin to discover what our hair is all about!
